Grateful Family is a Happy Family
In our fast phased world and immediate gratification brought about by the technology, people often succumb to the culture of self entitlement and self centeredness. In this contemporary time of commercialism, it is quite easy to fall into the trap of endless acquisition of material things and constantly reaching for more than what is needed in ones lifetime. People are seeking happiness through these goals and find themselves emptier than before.
A person’s pursuit of satisfaction and happiness will prove to be futile if our attitude and mindset will not be shifted from acquisition to appreciation. The secret of a happy life is not based on how many money we have in the bank or what type of car we are driving but in the satisfaction of knowing how blessed you already are with all that you already have.
Gratefulness is word not often practiced by the generation of today, it is however the single act that can bring true happiness in our lives. Building a family that thrives in gratefulness will raise up happy individuals. What to be thankful for and how to develop a culture of thanksgiving in your home, here are some tips:

Appreciate all things big and small
The home consists of the most familiar individuals. This familiarity often breeds entitlement and disregard of each other. Many times, we look past consideration and thoughtfulness shown to us by our spouse or children. We feel privilege of those favors received. When this becomes our subconscious, we tend to demand more and get more for ourselves, unappreciative of everyone. This only makes us feel disappointed and frustrated of ourselves and of others. We end up hurting the very people we should be grateful for.
If we want to avoid this in our lives, we have to train our eyes and ears for acts of kindness shown to us, recognize it and be grateful for the same. We have to take into consideration simple gestures and small blessings like the food we eat to the slaughter we encountered in the day to be moments to thankful for. We also have to reflect into our past. What do we have now; may it be material possession, relationships, achievements, good health and abilities that ones we thought are impossible to attain. Looking back will help us appreciate our situation better. It will focus our eyes on what we have rather than on what we don’t have.

Practices that will help us be more grateful and happy
If we want to improve on something we have to take measures in training ourselves to be good at it. We have to be focused and determined to develop the trait we want to practice in our lives. Gratitude is a condition of the heart, therefore we need to train it through outward practices to get the results we desire for ourselves -which is happiness. Have an appreciation talk within your day. It can happen during mealtimes or before bed time or while driving. Talk about what you are thankful for within the day. Make it a habit to say ‘thank you’ or ‘I appreciate you’ to each other. Share your blessings with those in need; nothing trains the heart more than giving to the needy. Nothing will open your eyes more on how blessed you are than seeing those who have less, and the power to help them will bring not only gratitude but genuine happiness to you. Be in constant thankful prayer with your creator. Realizing that all these is not from you but from Him who owns everything in this world will make you humble and grateful all the time.
A family who practices gratitude tends to be happier than those who are driven only by success and acquisition of things and experiences. Start making it a habit to be thankful and grateful for the now while you persevere for the tomorrow and you will live a healthier life.
