We celebrated my sister-in-law’s 50th birthday and my brother’s upcoming birthday this weekend.

Her celebration comes shortly after the Christmas where we celebrated the birth of our savior.

Last October, we celebrated my dad’s 80th birthday.  That’s a big one!

Truth be told though, birthdays have always been a bit awkward for me.  Since they are a gift from God, I am learning to embrace them.

How do you and yours celebrate birthdays?

Good Old Fashion Fun & Giveaway

This weekend,  my brother Greg and my sister in law Connie joined us in Felton to celebrate my birthday by riding a steam train.

We rode 30 minutes up to Bear Mountain which we learned has the steepest grade in northern America.

The sun was shining through the majestic redwood forest.

We heard bands playing in the background during the Sol Festival celebrating the first day of Fall.

Afterwards, we ate at a local bbq restaurant.  The flavors made our mouths water.

Then, we returned to Mount Hermon to grab an expresso and ice cream. Simply delightful.

Once Greg and Connie headed home to the north bay, we jumped in the car and attended the Saturday night service at Twin Lakes church. We studied Galatians 5:22 The Fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience,  kindness,  goodness,  faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. The one take away I learned is to avoid a killjoy of negative thoughts, because they affect your mood.

As we rode through the redwoods, I thought to myself, This is good old fashion fun. Just hanging out with family on a beautiful day enjoying nature. I love it!

Dad’s Day

I’d like to wish all the dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!

To be honest, Father’s Day has been a little awkward for me in that I didn’t grow up with my dad. My parents divorced when I was six years old and my brother was just two months old.

We spent time on weekends with our dad going bowling or out to eat. However, my mom never remarried. So, we didn’t have a male role model in our home.

My husband’s parents divorced when he was nine years old, his middle brother was 4 years old and his youngest brother was 1 1/2 years old. Their mom remarried, but unfortunately it didn’t last.

Later in life, we learned neither one of our dads had strong father role models growing up either.

Randy and I hope to break this cycle and are committed to raising our children together.  Sure, there have been bumps along the way and we aren’t perfect. Yet, we look to the Lord for our strength and guidance for our family.

A father to the fatherless

A defender of widows

Is God in his holy dwelling.

– Psalm 68:5

How was your relationship with your dad? I would love to hear about it.

Tis the Season

20171126_142111.jpg

As we wrap up Thanksgiving, our family took some time to rest and enjoy the season. We took a leisurely drive up the coast heading to our extended family’s new place in Foster City.

We marveled at the sunny 70F weather, sparkling pacific ocean, vast farmland and wildlife.

After a scrumptious lunch at my favorite restaurant The Spaghetti Factory in Redwood City, we braved the Serramonte Mall in Daly City where my son purchased a pair of basketball shoes. It was a special moment witnessing him buy them with his first paycheck.

Later, my brother suggested we take a walk along Christmas in the Park. So, we jumped in the car and drove south to San Jose. It was nostalgic returning several years later with Uncle Greg and Aunt Connie. The sidewalks were jammed packed, because it was opening weekend.

We strolled along taking in all the sights and sounds. I even got some new ideidehow to decorate our tree.

After a couple of hours checking everything out, we parted ways.

The next day we attended church and were reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season. It easy to get distracted during the busyness.  So, I hope to keep focused on Him through it all.

How about you? What do you enjoy doing during the Christmas season?
