Good Gifts

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the father above with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

-James 1:17

During this Christmas season God has been blessing our family. We’ve been puposeful on keeping watch for His hand at work. It’s fun to be surprised and see Him work through His creation.

Cabin

As I mentioned last week, my coworkers blessed our family with a beautiful mountain cabin for Christmas.  Well, the Guest Services Manager surprised us with four additional days. So, we get to enjoy it for a full week. Awesome!

We have been blessed with our Facilities team making sure we are stocked with firewood. Also, we woke up to beautiful poinsettias placed on our porch. Wow!

Tree

I also mentioned we were given a wonderful fresh cut tree by a coworker.  Another friend lent us some lights and a different frient lent us decorations for it and the cabin.

Presents

Day after day, we have been given Christmas presents from gift cards, basketball trading cards, clothes, money, cocoa mugs, candy, flowers and even bookmarks for which we had none. We are humbled by our community’s generosity.

Jesus

All of these things are nice. However, the best gift God gave us is His son Jesus.

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

-Luke 2:1-7

May you have a very Merry Christmas!

Blessings, Rebecca

I can’t believe there is less than three weeks until Christmas.

For a change up, we’ve been trying some old and new things this year.

Concert

We attended our first Mount Hermon Christmas concert & buffet. We savoured a delicious prime rib, salmon and ham dinner before listening to these amazing musicians/singers. This Louisiana trio, The Foto Sisters,  sang/played a mixture of traditional and original Christmas songs. Wow!

I have never wrapped ribbon around our tree before. I watched a tutorial from Laura at Garden Answers and thought we’d give it a try. I kinda like it…

Again, all seasonal preparation is in anticipation of Christmas; the birth of our savior Jesus. My favorite Christmas song is Mary Did You Know written by Mark Lowry. I wonder if she pondered the magnitude of her call.

Christmas Season

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. – Meredith Wilson

I can’t believe it’s December already. This year seems to be flying by. Even my 14-yr-old daughter said insightfully that it seems as you get older, time goes by faster.

Here are three events that ushered in the season for us this weekend.

Church

I attended our annual church women’s tea.  It was a lovely time spent with friends fellowshipping, eating, watching a musical play and listening to Author Kathi Lipp talk about keeping our peace during the Christmas season.

Shop

My daughter helped me Christmas shop for family and friends. We picked up gifts, tree decorations and a wreath for our front door.

Decorate

Alicia and I then decorated our cabin while the boys worked.

We put out various town pieces,  nutcrakers, advent calendar and ornaments; handmade, old and new.

Tea Time

20171202_210143.jpg

It was tea time and I drug my feet getting ready. I just felt blah. Probably because this week we had unexpected car troubles and I was contemplating how we were going to purchase Christmas gifts for family and friends.

Upon arriving, I entered a winter wonderland that was warm and inviting. My girlfriends greeted me with big smiles and hugs.

20171202_210608.jpg

The evening unfolded with great conversation, laughter, delicious food and presentation.

20171202_210312

Our speaker was Amy Carol of Proverbs 31 Ministries.  Her message was simple; Center and savor. Center yourself, calendar, etc. Savor your family, God, etc.

It was a perfect reminder for me to focus on Jesus and my family/friends this season. Our time together was what I needed for refreshment.

I went home and asked my family what was most important to them during Christmas, and prayed for the means to provide.

Cast all your anxiety on Him,

because He cares for you. – 1 Peter 5:7

Tis the Season

20171126_142111.jpg

As we wrap up Thanksgiving, our family took some time to rest and enjoy the season. We took a leisurely drive up the coast heading to our extended family’s new place in Foster City.

We marveled at the sunny 70F weather, sparkling pacific ocean, vast farmland and wildlife.

20160625_153208.jpg

After a scrumptious lunch at my favorite restaurant The Spaghetti Factory in Redwood City, we braved the Serramonte Mall in Daly City where my son purchased a pair of basketball shoes. It was a special moment witnessing him buy them with his first paycheck.

20171126_142359.jpg

Later, my brother suggested we take a walk along Christmas in the Park. So, we jumped in the car and drove south to San Jose. It was nostalgic returning several years later with Uncle Greg and Aunt Connie. The sidewalks were jammed packed, because it was opening weekend.

20171126_184046.jpg

We strolled along taking in all the sights and sounds. I even got some new ideidehow to decorate our tree.

After a couple of hours checking everything out, we parted ways.

manger

The next day we attended church and were reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season. It easy to get distracted during the busyness.  So, I hope to keep focused on Him through it all.

How about you? What do you enjoy doing during the Christmas season?

Merry Christmas

An angel of the Lord appeared to them (shepards in the field), and the glory of

the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them,

“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause people

great joy. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;

He is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will

find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Adopted Family

As Christmas approaches, I thought I would share with you a short story about a time when our family was adopted for Christmas. I hope you enjoy…

Blessings, Rebecca

Every good and perfect gift is from above. – James 1:17

Four days before Christmas, we still hadn’t any gifts for our nine-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter. Due to my recent job loss, my stay-at-home husband/dad and I didn’t have money to purchase presents for our children.

Two weeks earlier, I learned about a local outreach program where they placed your name on a list in the hopes a family would adopt you. I sheepishly applied for our kids so they would have presents to open.

A week later, I received a phone call, “Rebecca, our family has adopted your family for Christmas. We got everything on Austin and Alicia’s wish lists. I’d like to drop it off Wednesday.”

Stunned, “Wow, I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much. Yes, we’ll be here.

I meandered into the garage, “Hon, guess what? We’ve been adopted and she’s bringing our gifts next week.”

“That’s fantastic news,” he chimed.

“You’ll never guess who adopted us. It’s the children’s new school principal. It’s such a small world. I taught her daughter at preschool.” We chuckled.

The day arrived to receive our gifts, and I looked at my husband, “How do you feel?

My stomach is little queasy,” he said.

Mine too. I’ve never done this kind of thing before. We’ve always been able to provide gifts for our children. It’s very humbling.

We heard a knock at our door. My heart pounded in my chest. “Good morning. How are you? I’ve got all your gifts in my car,” she beamed.

We slipped on our shoes, “Let us help you bring the gifts in.”

To our surprise, she reached into her minivan and handed us several brightly wrapped boxes. Our arms were brimming with presents. “Wow, thank you very much! We really appreciate it.

“You’re very welcome. It’s my pleasure. I especially like to help my students.” She hugged us and went on her way.

As Randy and I sorted through the bounty of gifts, we found a $100 grocery gift card labeled “For Mom and Dad.” Tears welled up in my eyes, Thank you God for blessing our family this Christmas.

Have you ever been adopted or adopted a family for Christmas? Please share your experience with us.

Definition of Parenting
Having children of your own will keep you honest. Believe me, they know more than one might think. Whether it’s being reminded about missing church while on vacation, skipping bath night or forgetting to read this week’s library book, my children don’t hesitate to let me know when things don’t go as planned. I guess that is a good sign that we get it right most of the time.
It’s interesting how my view of parenting has changed over the years. The simple definition of “parenting” according to Merriam Webster Dictionary: the process of taking care  of children until they are old enough to take care of themselves: the things that parents do to raise a child. This sounds pretty straight-forward, right? This was my assumption growing up, as I watched screaming kids in the grocery store aisle in disbelief that the parents couldn’t control their children. Now, I’m the mom that races around the store trying to get everything before my two year old is finished eating the free bakery cookie. Whew! I’m pretty sure the Webster Dictionary decided it would be easier to stop with: the things that parents do to raise a child. As if the daily tasks weren’t enough, parents have an even greater responsibility of imparting values and morals to their children.
As a parent, I want to inspire in my children love, faith, devotion and confidence so that they can take it upon themselves to go out and succeed in their own endeavors one day. I hope and pray for their happiness and that they will lead and inspire others while demonstrating self-responsibility, courage and poise. Ben Franklin once said the following: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” These kids DO learn by example. Instead of only telling or teaching our children to help others, sign up as family to help serve meals at a shelter this Thanksgiving. Instead of only telling or teaching children to be kind, make cards this Christmas to share with people in the nursing home or hospital. Instead of only telling or teaching your children about Christ, put him at the center of everything you do. If they are going to be like me, God, please give me the strength to be like YOU! When Christ is in your heart, there is no limit to how bright your light will shine!
