This week our son attended high school camp 4.5 hours south of us in Santa Barbara. It is the first time he has been far away from home for a week.

At the same time, our daughter attended a junior high camp nearby. It is the first time she has attended a two week camp.

So, lots of firsts for everyone in our family, because it was the first time in 15 years Randy and I were without kiddos.

To add tension to the week, a fire broke out 29 miles east from where our son was set to camp. Hats off to the FRSB staff for for a great job of pulling it off despite the the threat of fire and CHP road closures. There is great summary video of their week on Mission Spring Frontier Ranch Youtube. I tried to insert it for you without success.

In the end, fun was had by all. Thanks be to God for keeping everyone safe.

Have you had any family adventures this summer? If so, feel free to share with us.

Summer Camp

I trust your Christmas was merry. Ours was! We relaxed by the fire, opened our presents and grazed on delicious food throughout our day. It’s hard to believe 2017 is just around the corner.

As I plan summer camp for our high schooler this week, I’d thought I would share a story with you about a time our son wanted to attend camp. We couldn’t afford it at the time, but the Lord provided a way.

Junior Camp

Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalms 124:8

I reclined on my friends’ backporch swing and enjoyed a barbequed steak dinner theyd prepared. “Hey Kim, did Logan enjoy junior camp?”

“Yes, he had a blast. You should send Austin.

Hmmm, I wonder how much it costs.

I meandered into their kitchen. “Nathan, how much is summer camp?”

“It was about four hundred dollars for the week which included lodging, food and activities.”

My eyes widened, “FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS! Ooh, unfortunately, we can’t afford that.”

“Do you know if they offer scholarships, I asked.

“I’m not sure. Check their website,” he replied.

That evening, my husband and I prayed, “Lord, we’d sure like Austin to go to camp. We don’t have the money, but you do. If it’s your will, please provide the funds necessary to send him.”

The next day, I called camp to inquire about scholarships and discovered they were all taken. As I hung up the phone, I looked outside and saw Nathan pulling up. I ran outside, He handed Randy an envelope. “Austin’s going to camp. Everything’s taken care of. Just send in his registration form.

“Are you kidding, I choked out the words. “Thank you so much!”

A few weeks later, Austin attended his first solo camping adventure. He swam, hiked, and canoed. He learned to eat whatever camp food was prepared and meet new people. When we picked him up, I noticed a change in him. He’d grown in confidence and independence.

“How was camp, Austin?”

It was fun, Mom. Can I go again next year,” he chimed.

It warmed my heart to see how God moved our friend to fund our child’s trip.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for blessing our son with an awesome experience.

Have you ever sent your child(ren) or another child(ren) to camp? I’d love to hear about it! Please share with us your experience…
